Alpaca yarn

We believe in not letting any of this precious commodity go to waste.  Every bit of fiber has a purpose, from the softest yearling fleece to the old matriarch of the herd.   When shearing we are dividing the fleece into three sections - the blanket (back and sides), seconds (neck), and thirds (legs and belly).  Each has its own purpose. The blanket is your softest, most prized fleece.  This will become luxurious yarn.  We have our seconds made into roving or rug yarn.  Our thirds we keep on the farm and use for felting and nesting balls.

The blanket and seconds are cleaned up and tumbled to remove excess dirt before getting boxed up and sent to America’s Natural Fiberworks for processing. Then we patiently wait for all that gorgeous fiber to come back transformed!

If you have a favorite alpaca, just ask what yarn they have made. Most are a blend of at least two alpacas.

Each skein of yarn is 200 yards of 2ply worsted weight.

The 2024 yarn has some fun surprises! Sparkles, silk and merino wool have been added to some lots for pops of color. We've also had a bit of the Flora and Fawna dyed a beautiful mossy green. Peruse online or come visit us at our local farmers market and feel this oh-so-soft yarn for yourself.

In case you are new to alpaca fleece and all its loveliness, here are the basics:

- There are 16 natural colors

- It is extremely soft, lightweight and durable.

- Water resistant

- Flame retardant

- Warmer than sheep’s wool

- Their fleece can be spun, dyed, woven or felted

- It has no lanolin, therefore naturally hypoallergenic

If you are knitting or crocheting pieces you will need to know how to care for your garments.

Your alpaca garments should be hand washed as the agitation of the washing machine could damage the fiber.

Soak your garment using a mild wool soap in cool/warm water.

After soaking, gently agitate and rinse. Being careful not to stretch the garment too much.

Gently squeeze out excess water, but don’t wring it out.

Lay flat to dry and reshape if necessary.
